Red Pōhutukawa

A bunch of red Pōhutukawa take centre stage in this piece, emerging from a shadowy corner of the canvas. There's a real looseness to the surrounding leaves, built up through loose, expressive mark-making that gives the whole piece a sense of movement.

I found these flowers in spring on one of my local coastal walks, the kind of detail that's easy to miss unless you're paying attention. Pōhutukawa trees bloom bright red in the warmer months, and spotting a cluster like this against the coastal bush always feels like a small, welcome surprise, a burst of colour in among all that green.
